Torsello, recently kidnapped by the Taleban in Afghanistan, were among the award-winners at tonight?s Foreign Press Association 2006 Media Awards. ???Journalist of the Year? was Dominic Waghorn of Sky News, for his report ?China: Human Rights?, in which interviewees risked their lives and Waghorn was physically assaulted three times to get his extraordinary report. ??The FPA is the world?s oldest foreign correspondents? club, and the Association?s Media Awards are the only opportunity for the British media to be judged and rewarded by their international counterparts based in London. ??The record number of entries to this year?s competition, confirm the rising status and importance of the FPA Media Awards to the British media. The almost 200 entries were judged by a panel of senior foreign correspondents, and three external judges: Kate Adie, Trevor Kavanagh and Peter Preston. ??The 2006 FPA Media Awards ceremony took place at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, in the presence of HRH The Duke of Gloucester, and hosted by Annalisa Piras, President, Foreign Press Association, who welcomed the keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Margaret Beckett MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. ??The FPA?s Premier Award, the ?Dialogue of Cultures? Award, for organisations or individuals who make an exceptional contribution to enhancing understanding between peoples, was won by Gabriele Torsello, known as ?Kash?.
